Mining
Mining is the single most significant contributor of Gross State Product (GSP), accounting for 23.6% of GSP in 2007-08 and directly employing more than 3300 people.
Key Facts
- Mining accounted for 23.6% of GSP in 2007-08, compared to 7.6% nationally.
- Mining output is volatile as production is dominated by a small number of large projects. Global supply and demand conditions and the impact of exchange rate movements on competitiveness are key factors affecting production levels and price.
- The value of Territory mining output has grown substantially in recent years, driven by increased gas and condensate production from the Bayu-Undan field, as well as increases in mineral commodities such as manganese and iron ore.
- Mineral and energy production is estimated to increase by 16.9% to $6.7 billion in 2008-09. A contraction of 7.8% is forecast in 2009-10, mainly due to a 48.5% decrease in the value of manganese production.
- In the medium term, high levels of exploration expenditure are expected to continue, supported by Territory Government initiatives.

Northern Territory Geological Survey
The Northern Territory Geological Survey provides world-class geo-scientific data and interpretations, particularly in under-explored areas with high potential for future discoveries. The survey’s current targeted geo-science programs are providing a fundamentally revised stratigraphic framework for explorers in western Arnhem Land and are placing the complex high-grade rocks of the eastern Arunta Region in Central Australia in their stratigraphic and tectonic context. Mapping of the central and northern Georgina Basin is complete and will be combined with ongoing depth-to-basement studies to provide a vastly improved dataset for phosphate explorers in the basin.

Geophysics and Drilling Collaborations Program
The Northern Territory Government has committed $2.4 million over three years to increase the intensity of exploration drilling and geophysics in greenfields areas of the Northern Territory.
Applications for co-funding of geophysical surveys, particularly Bouguer gravity surveys are encouraged. Airborne radiometric and magnetic surveys will also be considered, particularly over remote areas that have had little exploration to date.
Funding of up to $100 000 exclusive of GST is available per project or half of the direct project costs, which ever is less. Direct costs do not include administration or project management costs, land access, personnel, laboratory analysis or specific geoscientific analysis other than down hole surveys.

Exploration Opportunities
The Northern Territory is recognised as a highly prospective location. Under the Bringing Forward Discovery program an extensive list of mineral exploration opportunities is available.

Service and Supply Opportunities
The Northern Territory Government facilitates major economic and resource development projects. The growth of these major projects will provide businesses with the prospect to identify potential service and supply opportunities that may be available during the life of the project or through the downstream process that may exist upon completion.

Government Support
The Minerals and Energy Division within the Northern Territory Government’s Department of Resources is committed to supporting and advancing this vital industry sector by undertaking a number of key activities including:
- investment attraction, through a four year $12 million program called Bringing Forward Discovery (Ore-struck) an initiative that promotes the prospectivity of the Territory to explorers and investors
- supply of new generations geoscientific data that is made available to prospective explorers and investors
- support for companies going through the processes of the granting and maintenance of exploration licences and mining titles
- assistance and advice in Indigenous liaison and land access issues
- promotion of the opportunities in a variety of energy related areas, including oil, gas, petroleum, geothermal and alternative energy.
Minerals and Energy is also responsible for enforcement of compliance issues associated with the Mining Management Act and conducts mine audits and inspections to ensure compliance with mining management plans and relevant standards.
